What is the Calculator for Indications and Contraindications to tPA In Acute Stroke?

The NINDS trial from the NIH found that some stroke patients can benefit greatly from fibrinolysis (thrombolysis) with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA).

The patients who improved significantly were those who received thrombolysis with tPA within 3 hours of the initial onset of symptoms.

Not every patient is a good candidate for this treatment, and the study included numerous important indications and contraindications.

To help emergency physicians decide quickly whether a patient with an acute stroke should be given tPA, we created this checklist that shows all the indications and contraindications in a format useful for emergency medicine. This tool calculates a score that tells whether tPA is indicated, possibly indicated, or contraindicated in a given situation.
