Daily Question
How high can stress raise the white blood cell count, and how does the percentage of bands usually change with stress?
Answer
Severe stress can raise the white blood cell count to 18,000 to 20,000 cells per cubic mm. However, the percentage of bands will often remain unchanged. In patients with an elevated white blood cell count due to infection or inflammation, there will often be a "left shift", which is an increase in the percentage of band forms seen on the peripheral smear.
